Elevations Foundation is proud to support the important work of Healing Warriors Program. Much has been said and written about Colorado’s ongoing suicide crisis. While the suicide rate nationally hovers around 17.5 per 100,000, the suicide rate in Colorado is over 50% higher at 26.1. However, far less attention is given to the suicide rate for veterans. Colorado veterans take their lives at a rate of 42.9 per 100,000, one of the highest rates in the nation for veteran loss of life by suicide.
Research shows that numerous factors contribute to veteran suicides:
- Mental health issues
- Narcotic use/addiction
- Unresolved chronic pain from physical trauma
- Post-traumatic stress
- Interpersonal trauma
The scale of this suicide problem has overwhelmed existing channels for care on a national and community level. Many of our veterans need help, and that help is in scarce supply. Healing Warriors Program is a Fort Collins-based nonprofit that exists to help fill this gap by working to interrupt the factors that lead to service member suicides. Their dedicated staff of 40 provides non-narcotic treatment options that are effective in relieving depression, anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain. These treatments include acupuncture, CranioSacral Therapy and healing touch. Healing Warriors Program works closely with community partners to be part of the service member’s path to relief. They work together to help veterans restore their quality of life.
Healing Warriors Program’s Fort Collins clinic, first opened in 2013 and operating five days per week, has delivered over 15,000 sessions to Colorado’s veterans. Healing Warriors Program also operates a Greeley satellite clinic three days per week and provides monthly free pop-up clinics in Denver, Longmont and Colorado Springs.
On October 19, the Healing Warriors Program will host an evening celebrating veterans and supporting non-narcotic treatments for pain and post-traumatic stress. They are honored to welcome Sergeant Peter DuPré, a 96-year-old WWII Army Medic who will play the National Anthem on his harmonica. Sergeant DuPré played his harmonica for wounded soldiers during the war. The evening’s entertainment will be the Denver Dolls performing a tribute to the Andrews Sisters.
